ABOUT US

The program at Urban Explorers Day Camp has been designed using the latest in child developmental research. It has been developed knowing that every child has an innate curiosity and desire to learn, to explore new things, to overcome their fears, to reach their full potential.

Our philosophy is to provide each child with a menu of possibilities and with our patience, teaching and encouragement allow each child to select those items that interest them.

Unlike some other camps where activities are repeated daily whether a child likes them or not, Urban Explorers provides such exciting program diversity that each child should totally enjoy most activities and never feel locked in to something they do not particularly care for. Everyday is new and exciting.

Our camp provides traditional activities like athletics, games, arts & crafts and swimming. Swimming, particularly for children in the city, can provide great excitement or, through lack of exposure, great fear. With that in mind, we have developed a program with a local YMCA where their certified Red Cross lifeguards work directly with our children on water safety and swimming instruction. Not every child will become a swimmer, but every child will learn how to approach the water and enjoy their experience. With athletics, besides on-site games and tournaments, we hired both a male and a female NYC HS basketball coach to provide clinics for our boys and girls.

Our trips to the Astoria Sports Complex will provide the setting for Soccer instruction as well as testing our skills in the batting cages.

Another core philosophy at Urban Explorers Day Camp is our belief in “subtle comprehensive learning”. During the summer children may resist books and formal instruction, but think of all they can learn with trips to the Museum, NY Hall of Science, Bronx Zoo or White Post Farms. Learning on these trips is fun, hands-on and imprinted forever in the memory bank. In addition, the children explore some of the wonderful parts of their city which can be enjoyed time and again as they grow.

Other trips – a NY Mets game, a NY Liberty game, Adventureland Amusement Park – are more fun oriented; but, once again, unveil other exciting attractions available to NY city children. These trips not only create fun and excitement, but provide an even more meaningful learning experience because they are shared with other children the same age.

All activities are age appropriate and are conducted in a way that will ensure safety and meaningful results. For example, older groups and younger groups will never swim together since the approach and ability levels would be quite different. The same applies to trips. While the younger groups go to Once Upon a Time to watch a classic children’s story acted out on stage, older groups will go to the Museum of the Moving Image.

There are many activities loved by children of all ages and we have added these to our program. This list includes movies, bowling, cook-outs, dance parties with a live DJ, Karate clinics, yoga and magic shows. Additionally, we have hired an enrichment group consisting of three certified teachers, who will bring music, storytelling and learning projects geared toward each week’s trips and activities.

To further ensure your child’s safety and well-being we comply and enforce all NYC licensing and regulatory directives as they pertain to day camps. Our safety plan and organizational chart is on file with the NYC Dept. of Health. Our staff is screened through the New York State registry. We strictly adhere to the camper-counselor ratios and have full-time medical professional on site. We go so far as to privately lease facilities used for bowling, dance parties, movies and swimming to guarantee the total safety of our campers.

At Urban Explorers our concept is to provide a dynamic, diversified, professionally run program which caters to the needs of our children and parents.

We feel the benefits for children are obvious, but it also benefits parents because we are providing all the trips and experiences that parents want for their children but are unable to provide, due to their own adult commitments. Our program further benefits parents because there are no hidden charges or extras. There’s free door-to- door transportation anywhere in Brooklyn and the Rockaways. All trips, admissions and activities are fully included as well as total insurance coverage and camp shirts and bags. Tuition payment plans can be set-up based on the needs of each individual parent and there are no additional charges for these payment plans. As a matter of fact, there are additional savings available to union members or to any parent who completes payments two weeks before the start of camp. Feel free to call and discuss how Urban Explorers pertainto your child.
